Question
Give a geographical reason for the following:
Foothills of Himalayas have been affected by soil erosion.
Solution
The Himalayan foothills were once covered with dense forests, which helped to protect the soil from erosion. However, with the expansion of agriculture, grazing, and infrastructure development, large areas of forests have been cleared. Deforestation has increased soil erosion, as the exposed soil is easily washed away by heavy rainfall and flowing water. The foothills of the Himalayas are characterized by steep slopes and heavy rainfall which makes the soil more vulnerable to erosion.
