Question
Give a geographical reason for the following:
Jute is cultivated in West Bengal.
Short Note
Solution
Jute is grown in West Bengal since the area has good geographical conditions for its cultivation. The hot and humid climate, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 38°C and an evenly distributed annual rainfall of 150-250 cm, is ideal for jute production. Furthermore, the alluvial soil found in the delta sections of rivers such as the Ganges and Brahmaputra is extremely rich and ideal for jute cultivation. The considerable water supply from these rivers is required for retting, a step in the jute fibre extraction process. These factors contribute to West Bengal's position as a top jute farming region.
