Question
Give a reason for the following :
Ozone is thermodynamically less stable than oxygen.
Solution
Decomposition of ozone into oxygen results in the liberation of heat (ΔH<0) and an increase in entropy (ΔS>0) resulting in a large negative Gibb's energy change. Hence, ozone is thermodynamically less stable than oxygen.
