Question
Give an account of secretion of various parts of Adrenal cortex.
Answer in Brief
Solution
- The adrenal cortex is divided into three concentric zones: the outer zona glomerulosa, the middle zona fascicualata, and the inner zona reticularis.
- Mineralocorticoids, such as Aldosterone, are secreted by the outer zona glomerulosa. They control sodium and potassium ion concentrations, salt water balance, blood volume, and blood pressure. Aldosterone is the salt retention hormone.
- Cortisol and other glucocorticoids are secreted by the middle zona fasciculata. They control glucose, protein, and lipid metabolism. Cortisol is to blame for the rise in blood glucose levels. As a result, it is used to treat allergies. It prepares the body for emergency situations.
- The adrenal cortex's innermost zona reticularis produces sex corticoids (gonadocorticoids). These gonadocorticoids are crucial in the formation and maintenance of secondary sexuation.
