The western ghats in India are an example of mountains that create rain shadow areas. The moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea branch shed most of their moisture on the western slopes of the Western Ghats, resulting in less rainfall on the eastern side. Mahabaleshwar on the Western Ghats receives 250 cm of rainfall, but Pune, located nearby, receives less than 70 cm.
