Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister of India supported by the Janata Party alliance in the year of 1977.

His government was short-lived because of the following reasons:

1. The primary reason was not getting the magic M.P. numbers in parliament.
2. His tenure made the elite circle, Lutyens club, and the capital intelligentsia annoyed with him.
3. Desai’s tenure had some questionable decisions from a national security point of view.
4. His closeness and favour to Pakistan especially with Pakistani general-dictator Zia Ul Hoque was not liked by the nation.
5. His two years in office were marked with friction and disturbances.
6. The authoritarian tendencies of Morarji Desai was also a reason for his early downfall.
7. He was disliked within his alliance and in the Indian political circle.
8. Morarji Desai failed to get a parliamentary majority and had to resign in July 1979.
9. He was responsible for the first demonetization in India after independence.
10. He was not popular and was disconnected from the middle class and high middle-class people
