Effects of water pollution are as follows:

  1. Several waterborne infectious diseases are directly related to polluted water. 
  2. The heavy metal water pollutants causing health hazards in human beings are mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, selenium etc.
  3. Mercury causes abdominal pain, headache, diarrhoea, haemolysis, and chest pain.
  4. Lead causes anaemia, vomiting, loss of appetite, convulsions, damage to the brain, liver and kidney. 
  5. Arsenic causes disturbed peripheral circulation, mental disturbance, liver cirrhosis, hyperkeratosis, lung cancer, ulcers in gastro-intestinal tract and kidney damage. 
  6. Cadmium causes diarrhoea, growth retardation, bone deformation, kidney damage, testicular atrophy, anaemia, hypertension, injury of the central nervous system and liver. 
  7. Selenium causes damage to the liver, kidney and spleen, fever, nervousness, vomiting, low blood pressure, blindness and even death.
