Question

How does the tendency to lose electrons change as we go down in group 1 of the periodic table? Why does it change this way?

Solution

In group 1 of the periodic table, the tendency to lose electrons increases on moving from top to bottom. This happens because an electron shell gets added at every stage and, the atomic radius increases. As the size of the atom increases, the distance between the valence electrons and the nucleus increases. This reduces the nuclear attraction force, causing the atom to lose its valence electrons easily, and form cations.
