Question

If A = `[(2, 1), (1, 1)]` show that A2 - 3A + I = 0

Sum

Solution

Given
A = `[(2, 1), (1, 1)]`
∴ A2 = AA = `[(2, 1), (1, 1)] [(2, 1), (1, 1)]`

                 = `[(4+1, 2+1), (2+1, 1+1)]`

                 = `[(5, 3), (3, 2)]`

∴ A- 3A + I = `[(5, 3), (3, 2)] -3[(2, 1), (1, 1)] + [(1, 0), (0, 1)]`

                      = `[(5 - 6 + 1, 3 - 3 + 0), (3 - 3 + 0, 2 - 3 + 1)]`

                      = `[(0, 0), (0, 0)]`

                       = 0
