Question

If three vectors a¯,b¯,c¯ are not coplanar and xa¯+yb¯+zc¯=0¯, then prove that x = y = z = 0

Sum

Solution

Suppose x ≠ 0

xa¯+yb¯+zc¯=0¯     ...(Given)

xa¯=-yb¯-zc¯

∴  a¯=(-yx)b¯-(zx)c¯    ...[∵ x ≠ 0]

a¯ is a linear combination of b¯ and c¯

∴  a¯,b¯,c¯ are coplanar

This is a contradiction

∴ x = 0

Similarly, y = z = 0

∴ x = y = z = 0
