Question

In a girdled plant, when water is supplied to the leaves above the girdle, leaves may remain green for sometime then wilt and ultimately die. What does it indicate?

Short Note

Solution

In a girdled plant leaves remain green for some time when the water supply is above the girdle leaves. This is because leaves carry on photosynthesis in the presence of water. But leaves will not be able to translocate the food prepared by them as the girdling also damages the phloem. This finally results in the death of the leaves above the girdle, even if there is a regular supply of water.
