Question

In the case find whether the trinomial is a perfect square or not:

16x2 - 16xy + y2

Sum

Solution

16x2 - 16xy + y

= (4x)2 - 4 ×4x × y + (y)2

= a2 - 4ab + b2

...[Taking 4x = a, and y = b]

∴ The given trinomial cannot be expressed as a2 + 2ab + b2 . Hence, it is not a perfect square.
