In what ways lithium shows similarities to magnesium in its chemical behaviour?

Similarities between lithium and magnesium are as follows.
- Both Li and Mg react slowly with cold water.
- The oxides of both Li and Mg are much less soluble in water and their hydroxides decompose at high temperatures.

\[\ce{Mg(OH)2 ->[heat] MgO + H2O}\] - Both Li and Mg react with N2 to form nitrides.

\[\ce{3Mg + N2 ->[heat] Mg3N2}\] - Neither Li nor Mg form peroxides or superoxides.
- The carbonates of both are covalent in nature. Also, these decompose on heating.

\[\ce{MgCO3 ->[heat] MgO + CO2}\] - Li and Mg do not form solid bicarbonates.
- Both LiCl and MgCl2 are soluble in ethanol owing to their covalent nature.
- Both LiCl and MgCl2 are deliquescent in nature. They crystallize from aqueous solutions as hydrates, for example, \[\ce{LiCl.2H_2O}\] and \[\ce{MgCl_2.H_2O}\].
