Solution
Length of steel rod so that it is 5 cm longer than the copper rod at all temperatures should be 14.17 cm.
Explanation:
Let length of steel rod be = lst
Let length of copper rod be = lcu = lcu
If temperature is increased by Δθ then,
lst = lst(1 + αst Δθ)
lsu = lcu(1 + αcu Δθ)
lst = lcu = (lst - lcu) + (lst αst - lcu αcu)Δθ
But lst - lcu = lst - lcu
⇒ lst αst - lcu αcu = 0
(lcu + 5) × 1.1 × 10-5 = 1.7 × 10-5 × lcu
17 lcu = 11 lcu + 55
lcu = `55/6` = 9.17 cm
lst = lcu + 5
= 9.17 + 5
= 14.17 cm
