Question

List down the names of the stages of human growth and development. Also, mention the age range of each stage.

Long Answer

Solution

  1. Prenatal Stage (From conception to birth): A single cell transforms into a human baby with remarkable capacities to adjust to life outside the womb.
  2. Infancy (Birth-2 years): Drastic changes occur in the body, and the brain supports the development of a wide array of motor, perceptual, and intellectual capacities, as well as the initial intimate ties with others.
  3. Early childhood (2–6 years): These are the play years during which the motor skills are refined, thoughts and language expand at an astounding pace, a sense of morality becomes evident, and the child begins to establish ties with peers.
  4. Late childhood (6-12 years): These are the school years that are marked by advances in athletic abilities, logical thought processes, basic literacy skills, understanding of self and morality, and friendship and peer group membership.
  5. Adolescence (12-19 years): Puberty leads to an adult-sized body and sexual maturity. Thoughts become abstract and idealistic and school achievements become more serious. Adolescents focus on defining personal values and goals and on establishing autonomy from their families.
  6. Early Adulthood (19-40 years): Most young people leave home, complete their education, and begin full-time work. Major concerns of this stage include developing a career, forming an intimate partnership and marrying, rearing children, or establishing other lifestyles.
  7. Late Adulthood (40-65 years): Many people are at the height of their careers and attain leadership positions. They also help their children begin independent lives, and their parents adapt to ageing. They become more aware of their own mortality. They start taking the required precautions.
  8. Old Age (65 years-death): People adjust to retirement, experience decreased physical strength and health, and often try to adjust to a spouse's death. They also reflect on the meaning of their lives.
