Question
Long Answer Question:
Explain briefly the importance of Equatorial forests.
Solution
Equatorial forests are important in many ways as :
- They are very vital for our environment because they absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and exhale a huge amount of oxygen. Hence they are known as the ‘Lungs of the world’.
- They maintain the ecological balance so their destruction will adversely affect the ozone layer and cause great harm to live beings.
- They are the source of numerous medicinal plants and herbs, e.g., Quinine is obtained from the cinchona tree growing in these forests.
- They are a source of valuable hardwood timber like Mahogany, Ebony, Ironwood, Rosewood, etc.
