The main provisions of the Indian Independence Act of 1947 were:

Pakistan was to include East Bengal, West Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, the North-West Frontier Province and the district of Sylhet in Assam. - Constituent Assembly: Separate Constituent Assemblies were established for the two dominions. Each would act as the Central Legislature for their respective dominions.
- Princely States: The Princely States gained independence and all powers exercised by British authority were abolished.
- Abolishing the post of Secretary of State: The office of Secretary of State was abolished and safeguards were created to protect the interests of existing officers appointed by India's Secretary of State.
- Governor-General: Each dominion would have a constitutional head who would carry out the wishes of the ministers.
- Asset and Army split: Provisions were made to ensure a smooth split of the Armed Forces between the two dominions, as well as actions to share assets and liabilities.
