Concerns about the destruction these businesses generate were expressed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in 1984. Later, on December 30, 1966, the Supreme Court of India issued a decision, and following steps were taken:
- The Taj Trapezium Zone was located and described. To protect the Taj Mahal from pollution, a 10,400 square kilometre area has been established as the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ). Among the structures in the TTZ are the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, three World Heritage Sites. TTZ gets its name from its trapezoid form and location around the Taj Mahal.
- More than 200 local businesses have been encouraged to begin pollution control strategies.
- It was requested that the industries in this area convert to cleaner fuels like LPG, CNG, etc.
- Vehicles in this zone must run on unleaded petrol.
