Name the different types of parasitic plants with examples of each.
Long Answer
Solution
The following are the types of host plants: parasites, insectivores, and necrophagous. They cannot make their own food.
- Parasitic plants:
- Semi-parasites: E.g., Bandagula - It is on a large tree for support. It absorbs salts and water from this tree and makes its own food.
- Complete parasites: E.g., Amaryllis - It has no green matter at all, so it completely depends on the host plants for food.
- Insectivorous plants: Plants that live by eating insects are called insectivorous plants. E.g., pitcher plant, Drosera.
- Saprophytic plants: Carnivorous plants absorb nutrients by decomposing dead remains. E.g., Fungi.
