Questions
Name the four parenting styles.
Discuss any three parenting styles in conjunction with Parental Demandingness.
Discuss any three parenting styles in conjunction with Parental Responsiveness.
Solution
- Authoritarian parents: are high in demandingness and low in responsiveness. They are strict, parent-centred, autocratic, believe in adhering to rules, expect obedience, and are non-negotiable.
- Authoritative parents: are high in both demandingness and responsiveness. They establish rules for their children but show a great deal of interest and responsiveness to them. They are assertive and believe in discussion, explanation, and negotiation. They promote independence but set balanced boundaries.
- Permissive parents: are high in responsiveness but low in demandingness. They are warm and responsive, but they set no rules or standards for their children and do not hold them accountable for their actions. They have no control over their child, and they completely indulge in a child's demands, often spoiling them.
- Rejecting/neglecting parents: are low in both responsiveness and demandingness. They just do not seem to care what their children do or what they become. There is emotional withdrawal from their children. They are neglectful and lack warmth.
