Neelam’s father needs ${\displaystyle 1\frac{3}{4}}$ m of cloth for the skirt of Neelam’s new dress and ${\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}}$ m for the scarf. How much cloth must he buy in all?

Neelam’s father purchased the length of cloth for the skirt = ${\displaystyle 1\frac{3}{4}}$ m = ${\displaystyle \frac{7}{4}}$ m and for the scarf = ${\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}}$ m

∴ Total length he buys in all = ${\displaystyle \frac{7}{4}}$ m + ${\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}}$ m

= ${\displaystyle \frac{7}{4}}$ m + ${\displaystyle \frac{1\times 2}{2\times 2}}$ m

= ${\displaystyle \frac{7}{4}}$ m + ${\displaystyle \frac{2}{4}}$ m  .....[∵ L.C.M. of 4 and 2 is 4]

= ${\displaystyle \frac{(7+2)}{4}}$ m

= ${\displaystyle \frac{9}{4}}$ m or ${\displaystyle 2\frac{1}{4}}$ m
