The French naturalist Lamarck provided an example of a giraffe in the figure. He stated his view of evolution as follows: Life forms had evolved, but this was primarily due to the use and misuse of organs. He used giraffes as examples, who had to lengthen their necks in order to hunt for leaves on towering trees. Slowly, over time, giraffes gradually developed long necks as they passed on this learnt trait to subsequent generations.
