Question

P and Qare towns. A man drives from P to Q at an average speed of 50 km/h. He stop at Q for 4 hours and then heads back to P at an average speed of 40 km/h following the same route. What is his average speed (in km/ h correct to two decimal places) if he takes 22 hours for the entire trip?

Options

  • 48.48

  • 45.00

  • 36.36

  • 42.42

MCQ

Solution

36.36

Explanation:

Let distance from ‘P’ to ‘Q’ is x km.

Time = `"Distance"/"Speed"`

A.T.Q,

⇒ 18 = `x/50 + x/40`

⇒ 18 = `(9x)/200`

∴ `x` = 400 km

Total distance in entire journey = 800 km

Total time during journey = 22 hr

Average velocity = `800/22 = 400/11` = 36.36
