Question

Salt of Sc3+ and Ti4+ are colourless. Explain why?

Short Note

Solution

  1. Condensed electronic configurations of Sc3+ and Ti4+ are: Sc3+: [Ar] 3d0 and Ti4+: [Ar] 3d0, respectively.
  2. The ions Sc3+ and Ti4+ have completely empty d-orbitals i.e., no unpaired electrons are present. Thus, their salts are colourless, as d-d transitions are not possible.
