Question

Simplify:

−x + [5y − {x − (5y − 2x)}]

Sum

Solution

−x + [5y − {x − (5y − 2x)}]
We will first remove the innermost grouping symbol ( ), followed by { } and then [ ].

∴ −x + [5y − {x − (5y − 2x)}]
= −x + [5y − {x − 5y + 2x}]
= −x + [5y − {3x − 5y}]
= −x + [5y − 3x + 5y]
= −x + [10y − 3x]
= −x + 10y − 3x
= − 4x + 10y
