Question
Sita and Geeta start at the same time to ride from place A to place B, which is 90 km away from place A. Sita travels 3 km per hour slower than Geeta. Geeta reaches place B and at once turns back, meeting Sita 15 km from place B. Geeta's speed (in km/h) is:
Options
10.5
7.5
9
6
Solution
10.5
Explanation:
Distance between place A and B = 90 km
Speed of Sita = Speed of Geeta – 3 km/h
∴ Speed of Geeta – Speed of Sita = 3 km/h
Now, total distance travelled by Geeta = 90 + 15 = 105 km
Distance travelled by Sita = 90 – 15 = 75 km
Now, for a certain given time, ratio of speeds is equal to the ratio of distance covered.
∴ Speed ofGeeta: speed of Sita = 105 : 75 = 7 : 5
Comparing ratios, 7 – 5 = 2 units
2 unit `->` 3 km/h .....(Given)
∴ 1 units `-> 3/2` km/h
Speed of Geeta = 7 units = `7 xx 3/2` km/h = 10.5 km/h
