Question
Solve the following simultaneous equations:
x + y = 3; 3x − 2y = 4
Sum
Solution
x + y = 3 ...(I)
3x − 2y = 4 ...(II)
From equation (I),
∴ x = 3 − y
Putting the value of x in equation (II),
⇒ 3x − 2y = 4
⇒ 3(3 − y) − 2y = 4
⇒ 9 − 3y − 2y = 4
⇒ 9 − 5y = 4
⇒ −5y = 4 − 9
⇒ −5y = −5
⇒ y = `(-5)/(-5)`
⇒ y = 1
Putting the value of y in equation (I),
⇒ x + y = 3
⇒ x + 1 = 3
⇒ x = 3 − 1
⇒ x = 2
∴ (x, y) = (2, 1)
