Question

Study osmosis using parchment paper or a similar membrane.

Activity

Solution

Materials Required

  1. Parchment paper (or any semi-permeable membrane like dialysis tubing).
  2. Two small glass jars or beakers.
  3. Water.
  4. Sugar or salt (to make a concentrated solution).
  5. Thread or rubber bands.
  6. A dropper or measuring spoon.
  7. Food coloring (optional, for better visibility).

Procedure

  1. Prepare the Semi-Permeable Membrane:

    • Cut a piece of parchment paper or similar material to form a small pouch.
    • Tie the edges with a thread or rubber band to create a watertight pouch, leaving an opening.
  2. Prepare the Solutions:

    • Fill one jar or beaker with plain water.
    • Prepare a concentrated sugar or salt solution in another jar. Optionally, add food coloring to the solution for better observation.
  3. Fill the Membrane:

    • Pour the concentrated sugar or salt solution into the parchment pouch and tie the opening securely.
  4. Submerge the Pouch:

    • Place the pouch in the jar with plain water. Ensure it is fully submerged.
  5. Observe:

    • Over time, observe changes in the pouch. Water from the jar will move into the pouch due to osmosis, causing it to swell.
