Question

Suppose you recently visited Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in Amritsar. While you were there, you could visualise what might have happened on that unfortunate day on April 13, 1919. Describe the scene of the tragedy as visualised by you.

Answer in Brief

Solution

On April 13, 1919, a large crowd gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to celebrate Baisakhi and peacefully protest against the arrest of leaders like Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlu and Dr. Satya Pal. While people were listening to speeches and peacefully protesting, General Dyer and his soldiers arrived, surrounded the garden, and blocked the only exit. Without warning, General Dyer ordered his troops to start shooting at the crowd.

There was chaos as people tried to run and escape, but they were trapped. Many people tried to climb the walls or jump into the well to save themselves from the bullets. The soldiers continued firing until all their ammunition was used up. After the shooting stopped, the garden was filled with bodies, and there were belongings like shoes, clothes, and turbans scattered everywhere. Many innocent people, including children, were killed in the massacre. Jallianwala Bagh, once a place of peaceful protest, became known as a garden of death due to the horrific events that took place there.
