Question

The arch of a bridge has dimensions as shown, where the arch measure 2m at its highest point and its width is 6m. What is the radius of the circle that contains the arch?

Sum

Solution

AD = `6/2`

= 3 m

In the right ΔADC,

AC2 = AD2 + DC2

= 32 + 22

= 9 + 4

= 13

AC = `sqrt(13)`

= 3.6 m

radius = 3.6 m
