Question

The autocratic dictatorial regime of Hitler came up in Germany. What would have happened had the democratic traditions been strong in Germany? What precautions should we take in order to prevent the rise of autocratic regimes?

Answer in Brief

Solution

  1. As soon as the German Emperor abdicated after the First World War, in November 1918 a republican state, i.e. a democratic state, was established there. The constitution of that state gave the right to vote to men and women.
  2. The oppressive terms of the Treaty of Versailles that followed World War I led to an economic depression in Germany. This, however, created resentment among the people and especially the military towards this democratic rule. Hitler took advantage of this. As a result, the democratic system was shaken.
  3. Had democracy been strong in Germany, a dictator like Hitler would not have emerged.
  4. Dictatorship regimes should not come into existence. Therefore, democratic principles should be followed in daily life by respecting the principles mentioned in the Constitution. We should be aware of our rights as well as our duties towards the country.
