Question

The mass of an empty density bottle is 21.8 g when filled completely with water is 41.8 g and when filled completely with liquid it is 40.6 g. Find

  1. the volume of density bottle.
  2. the relative density of liquid.
Numerical

Solution

(a) Density of water is 1 g Cm3

∴ Volume of density bottle = weight of water in grams completely filling the bottle

Volume of density bottle:

Mass of empty density bottle = M1 = 21.8 g

Mass of bottle + water = M2 = 41.8 g

∴ Mass of water completely filling the density bottle

= M2 − M1

= 41.8 − 21.8

= 20 g

Density of water = 1 g/cm3

Volume = 20 g

∴ V = 20 g = 20 mL

∴ V = 20 mL

(b) Mass of liquid = (mass of liquid − mass of density bottle)

= 40.6 − 21.8

= 18.8 g

Relative density = `"Mass of Liquid"/"Mass of waste"`

= `(18.8)/(20)`

= `188/200`

= `94/100`

= 0.94

∴ Relative density of liquid = 0.94
