Question
The oceans are salty. Why?
Short Note
Solution
- As the rain erodes the rock acids in the rainwater break down the rock.
- Ions (or) electrically charged atomic particles are created.
- These ions are carried away in a runoff to streams and rivers and ultimately to the ocean.
- Many of the dissolved ions are used by organisms in the ocean are removed from the water.
- Others are left for long periods of time where their concentrations increase over time.
- Sodium and chloride are the most prevalent ions in Seawater, (about 90%) making seawater salty as it is salty.
