Five threats to wetlands in India are:

1. The increasing population pressure with the growing need for flood resources resuIts in filling of the wetland and conversion into agricultural lands.
2. Water pollution in form of release of chemicals from industries, sewage and agricultural runoff damage the wetlands severly.
3. Over exploitation and unwise use of wetland resources.
4. Removal of plant cover and overgrazing by domestic animals threaten the survival of wetlands.
5. Over drawing of water for domestic and agricultural use may even result in drying up of the wetlands.
6. Poor knowledge of ecological functions of wetlands put a negative pressure on wetlands for its conversion into different land use.
