Question

Use the information given in (a) to (h) to identify the substances P to W selecting your answers from the given list.

List:

Calcium Oxygen Copper (II) Oxide
Carbon Calcium hydroxide Copper (II) Nitrate
Lead (II) Oxide Hydrogen chloride Chlorine
Lead (II) Nitrate Calcium Oxide  Ammonium chloride
  1. P is white solid. When heated produces white fumes (sublime).
  2. P and R on warming produce an alkaline gas.
  3. On adding water to T, heat is evolved and R is formed.
  4. Q burns brightly in the air to form T.
  5. When S is heated, it gives off brown fumes and leaves a black residue of U.
  6. A solution of S is formed by warming U with dilute nitric acid.
  7. V is a gaseous non-metallic element that reacts with hydrogen to form W.
  8. A solution of W will neutralize the solution of R.
Long Answer

Solution

  1. P is NH4Cl Ammonium Chloride.
  2. P is NH4Cl Ammonium Chloride and R is Ca(OH)2 Calcium Hydroxide.
  3.  T is CaO and R is Ca(OH)2
  4. Q is Ca (Calcium) and T is CaO
  5. S is Copper (II) Nitrate and U is CuO (Copper oxide)
  6. S is Cu[NO3] and U is CuO
  7. V is Chlorine (Cl2) and W is HCl (Hydrogen Chloride)
  8. W is HCl and R is Calcium hydroxide
