Question

What are the aspects considered in the structure of the population?

Answer in Brief

Solution 1

Population structure refers to the composition of the population. It shows how the population is spread out across different aspects.

Some of the aspects that come under the structure of the population are-

  • Age structure classification: Age-sex pyramid or population pyramid shows the distribution of various age groups in a population. As the population increases, it becomes the shape of a pyramid. It shows the distribution of the population according to their age, and important determinants like the future productive capacity of the economy can be analyzed by this.
  • Population density: Population density is the intensity of population per unit area. It is the number of people living in the area per kilometer square. The density of the population is an important determinant of the population structure. It varies according to the nature of the area. In the hilly mountainous terrains, the population density will be lower compared to the plains.
  • Population growth: Population growth refers to the increase in the population of the area. It is the rate at which the number of people increases in comparison to the initial population over a period of time. Ironically, countries having lower growth rates will experience higher population growth and vice-versa.
  • Population size: It refers to the number of people in the population.
