Question

What are the personality traits according to the Big Five theory?

Long Answer

Solution

The Big Five personality traits are considered to be the most important factors influencing the construction of the human personality and motivating the patterns in people's thoughts, emotions, and actions. According to the big five hypothesis, each of the five dimensional qualities characterizes a range between two extreme poles. Regardless of age, gender, or cultural differences, all people have the same fundamental personality qualities, albeit they also vary in each of them.

The individualised big five traits of personality are:

  1. Neuroticism (vs. Emotional Stability): Similar to people that fit into the neurotic category, they exhibit some oddities in their behavior. Self-consciousness, a propensity to act rashly, and a propensity to experience negative emotions like melancholy, anxiety, wrath, or depression are some of the features or characteristics that fall under this category.
  2. Extraversion (or Surgency): Vitality, eagerness, and a propensity to seek out social interaction and stimulation. Those who fall into this group and have high extraversion scores have the traits of being gregarious, talkative, and generally enjoying being around others.
  3. Openness to Experience (also called Culture or Intellect): Admiration for creativity, passion, risk-taking, and novel concepts; inquisitive and creative. People who score highly in this category are typically imaginative and inquisitive, have a diverse variety of interests, embrace unusual concepts and ideals with ease, are sensitive to artistic and fantastical experiences, and are able to have rich emotional lives.
  4. Agreeableness (vs. Antagonism): A propensity to treat people with kindness and cooperation as opposed to suspicion and hostility. There is a connection between agreeableness and the qualities of modesty and directness. People who score well on agreeableness are helpful, kind, selfless, and able to believe that other people are acting with good intentions.
  5. Conscientiousness: A propensity to be disciplined, perform responsibly, and strive for success. People in this group are self-disciplined, organized, intentional, and obedient, and they have the qualities of reaching high standards. People in this category with low scores rarely make plans in advance. They frequently show themselves to be reckless, ill-prepared, and lifeless.
