Question
What are the various types of friction?
Answer in Brief
Solution
Friction is a force that opposes efforts to slide or roll one body over another. Without friction, it would be impossible to walk or run, but on the other hand, it increases the difficulty of moving.
The amount of friction between one surface and another depends upon the nature of the surface and the forces pressing them together. Generally speaking, smooth surfaces have less friction than rough surfaces.
Types of Friction:
- Static friction: The opposing force that comes into play when one body tends to move over another surface, but the actual motion has yet not started, is called static friction.
- Dynamic friction: It is the friction between two surfaces that are in relative motion with respect to each other. It is the opposing force that comes into play when one body is actually moving over the surface of another body. It is further divided into two parts:
- Sliding friction: The term sliding friction refers to the resistance created by two objects sliding against each other. This is also called kinetic friction.
- Rolling friction: The force resisting the motion of a rolling body on a surface is known as rolling friction or rolling resistance.
