\[\ce{\underset{\text{yellow}}{FeCl3} + 3NaOH -> \underset{\text{reddish brown, ppt}}{Fe(OH)3↓} + \underset{\text{colourless in solution}}{3NaCl}}\]

In excess of alkali , the reddish brown ppt. of Fe(OH)3 remains insoluble.
