Question
What is added to domestic gas cylinders, which gives a foul smell? Why?
Short Note
Solution
Butane is the major component of LPG, alongside propane and ethane. Although odourless, the LPG in our residential petrol cylinders emits a nasty odour. The addition of ethyl mercaptan, a foul-smelling gas, to LPG allows for immediate detection of cylinder leaks.
