Question
What is chemical equilibrium? What are its characteristics?
Solution
Chemical equilibrium is the state for a reversible chemical reaction where the rate of forwarding direction is equally balanced by the rate of backward direction and the process seems to be stopped.
Its characteristics are,
- The rate of the forward and backward reactions are equal in chemical equilibrium.
- The observable properties such as pressure, concentration, colour, density, viscosity, etc. of the system unchanged with time.
- In physical equilibrium, the volume of all phases remains constant.
