Question

What is the National Grid Reference (NGR)?

Answer in Brief

Solution

  • The coordinate system divides the area into 100 km × 100 km squares that are each identified by two letters (for example, PQ, UA, and UQ). Each 100 km area is subdivided into one-kilometre squares. The National Grid Reference (NGR) is a system for producing maps.
  • Approximately a century ago, the Survey of India divided the Indian subcontinent into 137 divisions. Each division was divided into sixteen pieces, each designated by capital letters ranging from A to P.
  • Each section is broken into sixteen parts. These are generated at a scale of 1 : 1000000 and are known as National Grid Reference.
