Question
What is the ripple factor?
Short Note
Solution
- The ripple factor is the ratio of the average value of the dc component to the root-mean-square value of the ac component in the filtered rectifier output.
- Ripple factor = `"rms value of ac component"/"average value of dc component"`
- The ripple factor for a half-wave rectifier is more than 1.21. For a whole cycle, the d.c. value of the output current in a full wave rectifier is 2i0/π, where i0 is the peak value of current. For a full wave rectifier, the ripple factor is 0.482.
