Question
What quantity must be subtracted from each term of the ratio 39 : 89 to make it equal to 2 : 5 ?
Solution
Let x be subtracted from each term such that
`(39 - "x")/(89 - "x") = 2/5`
⇒ 195 - 5x = 178 - 2x
⇒ 3x = 17
⇒ x = `17/3`
`17/3` should be subtracted from each term.
