Question
What is ‘ratooning’? Give two advantages of ratooning.
Solution
After harvesting, the lower part of the plant and the roots are left as they were in the field. This gives a new crop for the next year without fresh planting. This way the cane can be produced for three successive years. This is known as ‘ratooning’.
Advantages:
(i) The crop yields earlier.
(ii) The cost of cultivation is reduced as no preparation is done for the fresh crops.
