Question
What should be added to 3x + 6y to get 5x + 8y?
Solution
To get the expression we should subtract 3x + 6y from 5x + 8y
5x + 8y – (3x + 6y) = 5x + 8y + (– 3x – 6y)
= 5x + 8y – 3x – 6y
= (5 – 3)x + (8 – 6)y
= 2x + 2y
So 2x + 2y should be added.
