  1. In June 1806, military General Agnew introduced a new turban, resembling a European hat with a badge of the cross on it.
  2. It was popularly known as ‘Agnew’s turban’. Both the Hindu and Muslim soldiers opposed it
  3. So the soldiers were severely punished by the English.
    This was the immediate cause of the 1806 Vellore revolt.
