Question
When does a body rotate? State one way to change the direction of rotation of a body. Given a suitable example to explain your answer.
Solution
When the body is pivoted at a point O, the force applied on the body at a suitable point rotates the body about the axis passing through the pivoted point. This is called rotation motion.
Example: A door rotates around an axis that goes through the hinges that hold it in place when a normal force is applied to the handle.
To change the direction of rotation of the body:
Force F is applied at B to turn a steering wheel clockwise, while force A is delivered tangentially at A to turn a steering wheel anticlockwise. As stated otherwise, the altered point of application of force is the result.
