Explanation:
The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan signed on 19th September 1960. The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) deals with river Indus and its five tributaries, which are classified in two categories i.e.; eastern rivers and western rivers. According to the treaty, all the water of eastern rivers shall be available for unrestricted use in India. The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of Shahpurkandi Dam Project, Punjab on river Ravi. Implementation of this project would help minimising some of the water of the River Ravi which at present is going waste through the Madhopur Headworks downstream to Pakistan.
