Question
Which ratio is larger 10 : 21 or 21 : 93?
Solution
We have, 10 : 21 = `10/21` and 21 : 93 = `21/93`
3 | 21, 93 |
7 | 7, 31 |
31 | 1, 31 |
1, 1 |
Now, the LCM of 21 and 93 is 3 × 7 × 31 = 651
Making the denominator of each ratio equal to 651, we have
`10/21 = (10 xx 31)/(21 xx 31) = 310/651`
And `21/93 = (21 xx 7)/(93 xx 7) = 147/651`
∵ `310/651 > 147/651`
∴ `10/21 > 21/93`.
Thus, the ratio 10:21 is larger.
